Good Eatin'
"The Inuit people of Alaska have a distinct version of ice cream. It's not creamy ice cream as we know it, but a concoction made from reindeer fat or tallow, seal oil, freshly fallen snow or water, fresh berries, and sometimes ground fish. Air is whipped in by hand so that it slowly cools into foam. They call this Arctic treat akutaq, aqutuk, ackutuk, or Eskimo ice cream. . . .
Akutaq can also be made with moose meat and fat, caribou meat and fat, fish, seal oil, berries and other Alaskan things. Women traditionally made akutaq after the first catch of a polar bear or seal. [I]t was always made for funerals, potlatches, celebrations of a boy's first hunt, or almost any other celebration. It is eaten as a dessert, a meal, a snack, or a spread."
For a modern recipe, click here.
The first person who . . .
1. Makes akutaq
2. Provides photographic proof that he/she made it AND ate it
3. Doesn't throw up in the process
. . . will win a special prize! (No offense to the Inuits. I'm in awe of any people tough enough to eat a dessert made with reindeer fat.)

I was just wondering if you had tried their food and what you would suggest. Thanks.
r we not allowed to do the modern version
Yeeeaaah, that's one contest I won't be entering. I have a weak stomach (I almost puked when I accidentally ate onions that weren't supposed to be in my food).
I've made it so far and it looks gross haha I'm just waiting for it to freeze and do u want us to send the pictures to ur email
Kirsten, the first person will be emailing you by tonight. I promise. These things always go so much faster than originally thought.
I did it! I didn't have any snow, so I put ice in my blender, and I didn't have any berries, so a just used from frozen fruit. Not very good, but not horrible. I must admit I didn't eat more than a spoonful.
But how do I attach pictures?
Hailey James, AF, UT
You guys are insane! Yes, Nina and Hailey . . . send me your pictures to kikistrike@gmail.com
(If you can't send them via email, send me a note anyway, and we'll figure something out.)
Nina: I'm afraid I haven't eaten at any of those restaurants. But they look like they're in neighborhood that are supposed to have good food!
CRAP CRAP CRAP MUST HURRY

it was not bad. Just a little slimy...and I’m going to be about fifty pounds heavier soon. Other than that, though, all good :D lol
sorry for the multiple comments. I'm rather fidgety...now what am I going to do with the little tin of cholesterol and saturated fat I just bought?
You really think thats nasty? wait till you hear this...i forgot which company, but theses people wer ACTUALLY thinking about using HUMAN, yes HUMAN, breast milk for thier ice cream. now, kristen, tell me you are not even more HORRIFIED! i was disgusted. this lady on the radio was like 'I DONT WANT TO BE EATING ANOTHER WOMANS BOOBIE JUICE" omg i died lauging! she was an adult too! the pic is so funny! where do you get them? and these stories?!
sweet... i could try, but probably not... whats the Prize??????????????????????????????????????????????
I am so out of here! You people call that disgusting? My math homework is worse! And I have tried that ice cream once! It was goood! (And to Nina, my class got cheated! Yep, they tell you you're going to Planet Hollywood, then you pay, then they tell you Apple Bees. And they pick what you eat. Well, you get to choose, but it's stuff that probably has toenails and toilet paper somewhere in it! Do the words 'Rip' and 'off' come to mind?)
I’m sorry but no prize is worth eating that 'stuff', the only ice cream I plan on consuming anytime soon doesn't have any dairy in it.
Sorry, I won't be allowed to have reindeer fat in my house, and if anyone sees me making this, I'll be banned from using the kitchen forever.
And what are salmonberries? Cloudberries sound so cute.
Good luck to all. =) Hope it's yummy!
FIREISBLINDING: EW! WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE THESE DAYS!
Hey I love eating snow! Once every few years, in winter, we go up to this mountain (because it doesn't snow in AUS), and we go tobogganing (bad spelling alert!). I eat the snow if it's clean! mmmmm
I'm a veggie-tarian. No reindeer fat for me. ^.^
Irregular Kiki, you're a better speller than you give yourself credit for.
Oh, and my so-called "adventurous" food for the day is traditional New-World English settler corn cakes. There's a recipe for it in my history book.
that, my friends, is what i will be eating at my next birthday party. sooooo much better than cake. curse those overrated dairy products!
Aw you're so kind Patsee! Thank you.
Haha I would if I wasn't vegetarian.....although I must admit those Inuits have some good ideas, haven't we all enjoyed eating snow as kids? :D I sure did!
grimace is not a happy visual for me. my arch nemesis in middle school decided to name me grimace (for the way i walked of all things!)...anyway, this grimace pic reveals his true evil nature...
Dude, vegetarian... I have been one my whole life... so if I ate meat now, I would get really sick. Especially something as raw as deer fat...
International Mastermind & Patsee: Me too!!! xD
