The Miracle Fruit

(No they're not beans.) Believe it or not, the little red berries shown above have a remarkable power. They can trick the taste buds like nothing else. Just chew on a miracle fruit for a couple of minutes, and lemons will taste like lemonade. Limes will be better than candy. Even blue cheese will turn into a delicious treat. That's because the berries can make all sour foods taste sweet.

It's been used for centuries in Africa, where people like to eat them before taking bitter medicines. In Japan, dieters like them because they make even low-calorie foods taste like dessert. They're hard to come by in the US, (for years they were banned here), but now you can order them by mail. I'm thinking of trying them out!

Cool! I want to try one and then eat a lemon.

But I wonder why they're banned-- maybe they mess up your taste buds permanently if you eat them too often or something.

It seems that the FDA banned the fruit under mysterious circumstances in the 1970s. I've seen speculation on various websites that it may have had something to do with the sugar industry, or with the fact that aspartame was working its way to FDA approval at about the same time. Other than that i guess it could make something toxic taste good. But that doesnt seem like a reason to ban it.

Why are they banned? Perhaps there are some weird chemicals released in you brain, like mild hallucinogens or something. Or perhaps I have an overactive imagination.
