I Meet My Guide

My first meeting with the girl who was to guide me through the catacombs took place on the morning of July 15th. I met her at a café in the Latin Quarter, one of the oldest and bloodiest parts of the city. For hundreds of years, foreign students from the nearby universities and the native people of Paris staged gruesome and deadly battles in the warren of little streets just off the river. (Many over nothing more than the cost of wine.)

It was ten o’clock on a Saturday, and other than our waiter, it seemed as if we were the only people awake in town. Bastille Day celebrations had ended just hours earlier, and most Parisians were still sleeping off the effects. It was the perfect time to plan our expedition.

Though she’s only a year or two older than I am, Claire has been visiting the catacombs for more than a decade. But she only gives tours to those who come with a personal recommendation. Kiki Strike has seen the tunnels with Claire. So have several macho movie stars, one of whom didn’t like the idea of being guided by a girl. He took off on his own and was discovered twelve hours later, huddled in a corner crying softly to himself.

Claire said she had met members of the Perforating Mexicans while exploring the catacombs. She’d considered joining the club herself, until she found that their taste in movies didn’t suit her. She agreed to take me to see their underground cinema. (The one the police have yet to discover.) But there are far more interesting things in the catacombs, she assured me, than film clubs. Not only are there bunkers and crypts and rooms made entirely of chalk, but her grandfather had always sworn that there were passages under Paris that not even the most intrepid explorers had discovered—tunnels dug by the Nazis during the war. He had spent his entire life searching, and died before he could find them.

i really hope she'll come back soon, i loved her book and have just finished reading all the previous posts.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i dont know what could have happened to her though. I mean really... didn't she write all those things about how to foil a kidnapping and kick butt?... Surely she wasn't kidnapped... but what other explanation is there?

10:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

who would want to kidnap her though?

6:31 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's my question... I mean shouldn't she be able to foil a kidnapping and like kick butt if she did end up getting kidnapped any way?

9:31 PM
Blogger CosimaCat said...

This is interesting. Also, that's a very interesting idea about her being kidnapped; two possiblities: Too many people, was overwhelmed. Other: What if she did it on purpose? for some reason of her own? Think about it! What if she kidnapped herself?

4:14 PM
Blogger CosimaCat said...

I google imaged "Kirsten Miller" (results here) and found, on the first page, two pics that seem to be of the same person: this one and this one. But they still could be fakes; what if Mrs. Miller doesn't even exist? It could be someone posing to draw atention away from the Irregulars by masking it as a kid's book. Will someone please tell me that idea isn't ridiculous. I don't think I'd be able to stand it if she was just a normal person. Rather like Ananka with Kiki in the first bit of the book, as a matter of fact.

4:24 PM
Blogger CosimaCat said...

...if Mrs. Miller read that last comment of mine (and it wasn't true) I'll bet she'd get a laugh out of it.

4:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh wow that link is interesting.. And I think your idea might be possible about someone posing as her. And maybe she did kidnap herself for that exact reason! So people would be less able to track her down, and possibly find out who she is and if the Irregulars really are real. Times like this I wish I lived across the country in New York (it would be a lot easier there than here in california.)

i really miss her i wish she'd come back. i finally found something interesting to read and it's disapointing to think maybe she just quit blogging to work on her second book. i mean its not like we have any evidence to suport the kidnapping theory and kidnapping herself seems alittle meldramatic to me

All right people I have an Idea. Also a Question. Well, two Questions. Here they go:

-Idea:
Anyone interested in this gets a Blogger account (preferably Beta). Thing is you can do a blog that has team members so we could do that. People who don't want to do an account can leave comments. We could also do a "mailing list" type thing - if people want to recive the posts as we post them. Just an idea.

-Questions #1, @ Lili Stroke:
Is it a coincidece that your name/nickname/psuedonym sounds a lot like Kiki Strike, albeit with a few letters changed? Also, what with you doing anon comments, we can't know if its one person the first time then another then another; so how can we tell? I want to hear some information before I do something I'll regret.

-Question #2, @ the people who call themselves "anonymous":
Please, please, please, just click on "other" and give yourself a name, even if its only "person1" or something like that. I don't know if anyone else has found this frusturating, but I'm trying to follow the thread of this, if you will, and I have to guess at who's who, so if its not too much trouble I'd really appreciate it and I bet anyone else trying to follow the discussion would too, though I can't speak for them.

I really hope you people will think about these points.

What do you mean by unlisted? And I totally agree with you. I don't know why Lili has a nick name of "Lili Stroke" because that is easily changed to "Kiki Strike" and in the end of the book Kiki is 14 years old, so... Though I already sent an email... I get really curious.
And about the anonymus thing, I get what you mean. There are some anonymus people that I agree with and some I don't but I don't know which one is which..

@alexxis: UNLISTED is, um, well, here's Blogger's official explination.

@bookworm1: Well, sounds like you're one of those luckies that live in New York. The world's a big place, bud, and if you don't mind me being blunt, I'm not sitting and waiting and wishing since unless there's a series of weird coincidences that end up with the Irregulars in a small town in MEXICO. I'm not holding my breath. (Sorry if that sounds rude but I'm pressed for time and so saw no reason to mince words, I'm very sorry if I offended anybody but thats my opinion) Anyway I opened a seperate account to email her just in case, so if I have to I'll delete it.

@bkwrm2: Alright! Someone made a name and had some smart suggestions! Yes in a way Lili does sound too good to be true. But I'm grasping at straws for any chance I might have. And I'm going to be nice and give you guys a segue, so that leads me to:

@Lili Stroke: Honestly I was just talking coincidence, I don't mind your nickname, one of mine sounds awful like a character in a book too.
A blogger account is an account on this service she's using that'll let you make your own blog, they're pretty nice, I recommend the beta because then even if you don't know what coding they're using you can still customize your template to some extent, here
you can start your own.
That's veeeeeeeeery interesting that you had that nickname for a while... hmmm... *strokes beard* *remembers she doesn't have a beard* *is vaugely confused*

Thanks everyone who read this for deeming this important enough that you used some time that you'll never get back (why am I so morbid?) to read this, I appreciate it.

And why does this need moderation? Oh well, atleast you took the advice and made a name other than anonymous. I'm totally thankful for that one...

Congrats on your new account alexxis.

About the husband then why does she say that her husband was the first one to realize that her scribbles would become a book? (CLASSIC CLICHE MY-HUSBAND-WAS-SO-SUPPORTIVE ALERT) Also I've heard he's an author, but maybe its just a red herring to steer us away from that... from that um... from that um... Okay that part I haven't figured out yet.

~Cat R.

PS-If anyone will give me a decent name idea for the blog I'll start it, and alexxis if you want I'll put you on as a team member, for the blog to use as a forum for speculations. Just let me know.

well theatre you asked how am i an irregular if o don't know kiki, and it's very easy to answer...
to be an irregular you don't need to be anyone at all, or know anyone at all either, the thing is that you have to have a good heart and feith in what you do or think, and ofcourse never be afraid. the irregulars from the book are supposed to save new york, i just want to save people from the same humanity. HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERY ONE.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Joyous Kwanza everybody...

Just wanted to say, once again, if you got a Blogger account and want in on the blog tell me and I'm still taking name suggestions.

@Lili:
1. Seems to me its a little hard not to be scared at all. Hard as in impossible.
2. If we can be Irregulars on our own why email you? Yes I will but I want to know.
3. Saving people from humanity? Good idea, but a bit, um, high expectations no?
4. Lucky you, 50 presents... I know what you mean about the doll thing, maybe if you pointedly donated them to a rummage sale for charity (don't know if where you're living they have that kind of thing - here there's an annual one) she'd get the picture?

@Vintage Rose 15:
Welcome! The blog will be speculations and also analyzing interesting bits in the books. I was thinking maybe "Irregulations" (Irregular Speculations)... If you get an account you're welcome to tell me if you want to be a teammember and if not you can comment there, too.
My favorite Irregulars are... Kiki Oona and Ananka. (When I took the quiz it would end up as either Kiki Oona or Ananka which is kinda funny because they're my favorite ones, so I thought that was an odd coincidence - I still can't hack much though :(, HTML's not much good for that ;))

@Alexxis
Ok then, I'll add you as soon as we have a good name.
Ya the WPOISON thing is a bit tecnical... I thought it was funny though, that the spam bot would be stuck in an infinite circle... ;)

@Strike
I was wondering if you'd be interested in the blog when your account's back up...

As usual, I remain

They are brave ya but not, like, completely fearless.

One post nearer to 100! Let's make that our goal for New Years ;)

@Alexxis: You don't have to post from your email, but on your blog, see how it says "blog authors" if you go Settings>Permissions and then if you click "add blog authors" it says to put in their email address? Lili and Bookworm1: I thought Bookworm1 was being pretty obstinate. And since I was jumping to conclusions I thought that they were doing it on purpose (can you tell I wasn't thinking quite straight?). And it kinda hurt my feelings. Because if they were waiting for Kiki to pick them then I thought that would mean they were somewhere she could feastably be, and so my mind jumped to New York, and suspicious person that I am I was offended. Since as I've mentioned I think there are very slim chances for the Irregulars to be in Mexico, and if they are, well, Mexico's a big big place and where I live is small, and when I think about that I get all depressed so in short I was blaming Bookworm1 for getting me depressed again, which is just plain ridiculous, which once again shows the lack of straight thinking I was possesing, and so I apologize sincerely to Bookworm1.
Also, how could someone use your account to blackmail you? I suppose they could get your name off it unless you were using a fake one... and I guess if they were a hacker or a programmer... Okay, readers will be spared the technical jargon.

Alexxis: I was trying to explain ways you could make your email address harder to get off the web if you put it on the web. For example if you have, paint or whatever, Paint is a standart accesory on most/all Windows computers so if you're running windows you probaby have that (I have No Idea what Macs use) you could just draw or type in your email address and upload it to a page then make a link - does that make any sense? - because computers so far have a lot of trouble with images which is why a lot of the time when you sign up for something there's image verification... someone warn me if I'm being to tecnical, bad habit of mine, I might have to go get Mom to translate for me ;) (for a while her job was translating normal person to geek and vice versa, if anyone wondered)

Okay since that is an exceedingly long comment I'll be quiet now and go read something. Have a nice day all.
